# Terminate and return Adobe licenses

Terminate and return licenses within the 14-day return window.

You can cancel an Adobe subscription and return all of its licenses by placing a termination order. This helps you get a credit for licenses you no longer need.

You can only terminate a subscription if **every** license on it is still returnable. That means each one was bought or renewed in the last 14 days, and after the subscription's most recent renewal. If any license is outside the return window, the termination order is refused.

To stop a subscription that cannot be terminated, turn off auto-renewal instead. The subscription then expires on your anniversary date. For more details, see [Change Adobe subscription auto-renewal](/extensions/adobe-vip-marketplace/manage-subscriptions/change-adobe-subscription-auto-renewal.md).

To return only some of the licenses, reduce the subscription's quantity instead. For more details, see [Reduce Adobe license quantity](/extensions/adobe-vip-marketplace/manage-subscriptions/reduce-adobe-license-quantity.md).

### Prerequisites <a href="#howtodownsizeamicrosoft365subscriptionlicense-prerequisites" id="howtodownsizeamicrosoft365subscriptionlicense-prerequisites"></a>

Make sure the subscription is active, and that all of its licenses were bought or renewed in the last 14 days.

You cannot place a termination order on the day before your anniversary date or on the anniversary date itself (US Pacific time). For more details, see [Key dates and deadlines](/extensions/adobe-vip-marketplace/key-dates-and-deadlines.md).

   {% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Submit a termination order for the subscription**

In the guided **Terminate subscription** flow, complete the following steps:

1. **Items** – Verify that the **new quantity** field displays a `0`, then select **Next**.
2. **Details** – Add or update the reference ID and your comments. Select **Next**.
3. **Review** – Review the order details, go through the terms and conditions, then select **Place order** to submit your order.
4. **Summary** – Review your order summary, then select **View details** to open the order details page, or select **Close**.
   {% endstep %}
   {% endstepper %}

### Next steps

Your termination order is processed automatically. When it completes, the subscription is canceled, its status changes to **Terminated**, and auto-renewal is turned off. In the Adobe Admin Console the subscription is removed, and its licenses become unavailable to users. You receive a credit at the price in effect when the return is processed.

If the subscription has licenses from several orders, they're returned one after another, so the order can stay in **Processing** a little longer. You can follow the order on its details page.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.platform.softwareone.com/extensions/adobe-vip-marketplace/returns-and-termination/terminate-and-return-adobe-licenses.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
